Editor’s Note

Our featured artwork of this issue, Bridget Stanton’s “Exam Week,” well illustrates how I believe the terrain of my brain looked during this finals week and, well, most of the semester. A crazy external world has certainly led to an even crazier internal one; like the exploding colors in Stanton’s piece, I have felt the flurry, the frenzy building inside of me as I’ve tried to negotiate all of the challenges 2014 has already thrown my way.

One such challenge has certainly been this Student Edition. For a while, I was very concerned the issue would never come together. But just as dark, pessimistic eddies began to devour my passion for FLARE and Flagler, we started getting more submissions. And as these incredible works surfaced, I was reminded of the great talent our little school possesses. Needless to say, I am so proud of the issue we have assembled. I could not have stayed buoyant without the support of my amazing staff and, of course, Brian Thompson, who has acted as my personal motivator/therapist more than once this semester.

So your exam week may have been awful. Maybe your entire semester was hell. But I have something amazing to tell you: it’s over now. What’s done is done. Let the bright colors consume the darkness rather than the other way around. Take time to take care of yourself. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the end of the semester, graduation, the start of summer, and new adventures than taking some time to scroll through this fantastic, student-fueled edition.

I mean, we can finally read for fun again. How great is that?!
