Laura Henning

1. Year, major(s)/minor(s), plans after you graduate:

Senior, double majoring in English and Spanish with a minor in Illustration. After I graduate, I hope to teach English abroad in a Spanish-speaking country for a year before going to grad school. I’d eventually like to earn my PhD in English. I also want to write and illustrate bilingual children’s books.

2. What’s the last book you read for fun?

Mi país inventado by Isabel Allende. An absolutely gorgeous autobiography from the master of magical realism herself!

3. Coffee or tea?

Iced coffee, black.

4. If you could be any literary character for a day, who would you be and why?

Stargirl from the eponymous young adult novel by Jerry Spinelli. I’ve read this book over a dozen times. I first read it when I was in fifth grade, and it couldn’t have come into my life at a better time. Stargirl is so kind, so compassionate, so genuine; I’d love to inhabit her mind for a day. Plus, I’d get to carry her adorable rat, Cinnamon, around with me!

5. Quote to live by:

“You cannot protect yourself from sadness without protecting yourself from happiness.” –Jonathan Safran Foer, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

  1. Sorry, Laura.
I have “Brown Skinned Girl” published in Your summer edition. Wondering if I can get my contributors copies.
